John Hopkins hospital did a research on the effectivity of weight loss programs that are aired through radio and on TV. The findings that were found were quite different from what was expected. It was found out that only a few programs on radios help users lose more weight compared to their counterparts who don’t use radio shows. The findings of this research was featured on a trusted publication the “Annals of Internal Medicine” on April 6th.
It was also concluded that if the radio shows were to be more effective in affecting weight loss on its listeners and watchers, longer periods of time were needed to as to make the radio shows more effective.
Weight loss specialist and assistant professor of Medicine at John Hopkins University Hospital Kimberly Gudzune, M.P.H, M.D urged that primary doctors needed to be more aware of which programs led to more weight loss on their patients and hence urge their patients to tune to those programs. On the journal published by the John Hopkins University Hospital, it was clearly stipulated out on what programs doctors should recommend their patients to view.
On the findings, investigators found out that only 11 programs out of 32 programs were found to be effective in effecting weight loss on their patients. The study was done through trials (Controlled and random).. Of all the 11 programs only 2 programs managed to attain and support the gold-standard data. This showed that in a year on average, trial participants were able to lose a good amount of weight compared to people who didn’t use these programs and were doing DIY dieting, or have undergone counselling and other methods for losing weight.
Moreover, it was found out that radio shows were generally modest with people who took part in them. They were losing on average between 5% and 3% more than the control groups that the studies were done on. Gudzane also noted that the study didn’t manage to gauge or measure the average number of kilos or pounds lost in each radio show or program. Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers were two programs that were recommended to clinicians who had patients who were on the obese side and were wondering which program should they recommend to their patients. Another program that was recommended by the journal because it showed promise in terms of reaching weight loss goals was NutriSystem.
Additional studies and research were needed to be done in order to determine and evaluate whether the results from these radio shows were long term.
The way the research was done was doing 39 trails on 11 programs and all of this was in a randomized trial as previously weight loss radio shows had never been done and studied in randomized clinical trials. NutriSystem, Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers were found to incorporate counselling, nutritional information and goal setting hence that is reason why they were very effective compared to the other programs. Other programs that were included in the study and research were mainly on very low calorie meal programs. These programs are OPTIFAST, Atkins, eDiets, Lose, it, SlimFast, Medifast and HMR. The effectivity of these programs was less compared to NuttiSystem, Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers.
It was concluded that radio shows and programs can be effective if only recommended well to patients and also if the radio shows are long enough so as to have the desired effect on viewers.
